A Numbers Puzzle - Solved!
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:36:18 AM »
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY:

Note! Only one match attempt per day, by AutoPuzzles member, is allowed in this puzzle.

* Multiple guesses with a 24 hour span will result in the second and subsequent guess being scrubbed, and you will be precluded from further participation in this puzzle.

* Once you post an ID attempt, you must wait 24 hours from the time stamp on that post until you make your next ID attempt.

Now, on to the fun  :)

Below are twelve pictures of automobiles, most of which you should be easily able to identify. I've also included a variety of numbers. Each of those numbers are related to one of the cars. Some are measures of capacity, others are dimensions, and others denote some other thing about one of the cars. I'm pretty sure there are no numbers that apply in the same way to two of the automobiles. The number that goes with car "A", for instance, does not apply in the same way to any of the other cars here.

For 1 point each, tell us which number goes with which automobile, and why.

Only a complete answer will earn a point!

If you haven't registered yet, you need to do so in order to reply.  You can do so by clicking here.

If you have not done so, please familiarize yourself with the AutoPuzzles Rules before attempting to solve this puzzle.

And the numbers:

1-5-3-6-2-4 = "A" / 1964 Jaguar 3.8 XKE Firing Order

85 = "E" / Fiat Topolino KPH top speed

6.15 = "L" / a :1 compression ratio for a 1939 Ford V8 De Luxe Fordor

2896 = "G" / 1949 Ford wheelbase in mm

17 = "H" / 1949 Packard Eight Station Sedan's gasoline capacity, in gallons

0.0343 = "C" / PS/kg power-to-weight ratio of a 1951 Volkswagen Beetle

2,643 = "K" / Top list price in dollars for a 1958 Edsel Ranger

28 = "B" / 1961 Corvair Wagon PSI Rear Tire Air Pressure - Cold

884 = "F" / 1971 Mazda RX3 KG weight

33 = 'J' / Chevrolet Vega Hatchback turning circle, in feet

8 = I / 1979 Dodge Colt forward gears with 'twin-stick' transmission

101 = "D" / Millimeters. Amount by which the AMC Pacer's passenger-side door is longer than the driver side door

0.0343 matches with "C", the circa 1953 Volkswagen Beetle. It's the power-to-weight ratio in PS (hp) per kg.

The 1130-cc engine developed 24 PS @ 3,300 rpm, and weight was 700 kg. 24/700 = 0.0343 PS/kg.

Sorry, that's not it. More than one of these cars has 8 cylinders under the hood.

Since I've been totally unsuccessful in finding answers to these puzzles, I'll have to content myself with suggesting that the answer for "G" be changed to mm, rather than inches.  I've owned some long cars, but never one that was over 200 feet in length.  :)

6.15 and "L", a 1939 Ford V8 De Luxe Fordor.

The 221 cu in engine has a compression ratio of 6.15:1 (though some sources have different figures - very confusing!).

There were a wide range of compression ratios over the span of years during which the Ford flathead V8 was produced. I've found this figure quoted on a couple of different sites that seem reputable and well-researched.
