I  knew I had seen it somewhere, and if I hadn't remembered the drone prototype I would never have retraced it..THe guy behind the wheel and the idea is Walter Hammond Righter (1905 - 1982), who then sold it on to the company mentioned in the article.

Nicely done. RadioDrone planes (that's a full-size prototype) were built for target practice by pilots and airborn gunners
