Whatsit? I don't know #536 - John Bucik's Pursuer
« on: June 02, 2011, 09:37:26 AM »

Ever seen this ?

If you did, please respond below and, for two points, tell us what is this car and who built it.
I have no identification for this car myself, so two points for the whoever solves this.

That's what I guessed too, but it doesn't really help with identifying the car.

Is that positive camber on the rear wheels, suggesting swing axles? Could it be Volkswagen-based?

I think we have some license plate experts around here. Where does this white on red plate come from?

I've only had a quick look around, but it does look to be consistent with an Illinois license plate from 1961 or 62.

1961 was the first year that Illinois started using the two letters + four numbers format, and plates for that year were red with white lettering. 1962 plates were orange with white letters, which is also a possibility.

Earlier plates were all numeric, and the colour schemes of later ones don't match.

This is speculative, I know. Any experts on US license plates out there?

1962 Illinois seems correct, right?

Or '61. It depends how you judge the colour. I've tried normalizing the colour histograms in Photoshop, and I'd say it was red, but I'm not sure.

So we have a homebuilt dreamcar, perhaps VW based, built before 1961/62 by - according to the signature on the picture - someone called G. Bucik (or similar) from Illinois. Who can find out more?

I've found the same photo as a
Rocket car, Philbert, Camarito
The Leaning Tower of Niles, Illinois was built in 1934 by industrialist Robert Ilg on the grounds of a recreation area for employees of the Ilg Hot Air Electric Ventilating Company of Chicago. The gold speedster in the foreground is an atom age mystery. (photo is dated November 1961 – ed.)

Thanks, Oguerrerob. I know where you found it I guess, and that is interesting information about the Niles tower.
But "Philbert" and "Camarito", in that blog, refer, not to this one but to two other cars ( both former autopuzzles besides).

The design is quite interesting to say the least.
Would agree that the camber of the rear wheels leads one to believe that it is a rear engine layout.

I am going to northern Illinois later this fall to do some research.
Perhaps I will run into something regarding this car?

Since I was exchanging e-mails with Geoff Hacker about the Zar Car, I asked him if he had any idea about this mysterion, as he calls them.

Of course – that was built by my friend John Bucci in the early 1960’s. was his answer. He also sent me a photo of himself with the car taken two weeks ago when he visited  Mr Bucci. Geoff once said that I could post any of his pictures on Autopuzzles, but since he's about to publish an article on Bucci on his own website very soon, I'll wait until he has published it. I hope he'll give us more details then.

So this one is locked for him until then I guess, being a member. The only problem is that he a rookie  :D and this is a PAFW puzzle...

I had to smile  when you called Geoff a rookie herein autopuzzles.
Yes, even though he does not have the puzzle points, he is a walking encyclopedia of Historic automobile knowledge.

I recently spoke with a few persons of a unique company with a very unique & talented board, this is for a possible future model car of the Harris Speedster by this company.
Geoff is in this very elite group.
Please check out "AUTOMODELLO" ON THE WEB.

Small world sometimes.
Love autopuzzles,
John

The answer could be as simple as open to all!

Right.

1. Move to the Pro section (which is open to all)
2. Lock for Geoff Hacker
3. Send him an e-mail, telling him to come and get his point.
