Since it is obviously a Ford V8 I assume that it wasn't built by the FoMoCo itself - and certainly they had good metallurgists who would never have let them chrome-plate so many safety-critical parts.
More than that I can't say, as the "hot rod" culture is not something I have ever known anything about.

Winner of the 1955 AMBR.

The '26 Model T Roadster got its nickname because it was turned on its side during the show several times to show off the chromed and detailed chassis and suspension.

I guess you are trolling for a responce, so I'll give you one.



Its what he calls himself, and has done so for a long time.

He is a famous much respected old Hot Rodder.


And also, Hot Rodders are aware of the metalurgical problems caused by Chrome Plating.

I'd have to go back through my Doug Nye/Len Terry books to check when this became a problem on Race Cars.

( when the suspension components got fragile enough that they would not allow for the loss in strength, due to enbrittlement )


Early Ford Axles are evidently overbuilt by a big enough margin.

Because not only do we chrome them, we drill them for lightness, and reforge the ends to drop them.


And sometimes we even bolt on big brakes to stop the car with its newer, bigger and more powerfull engine...

In my '73 edition ( first published in '69) of Allan Staniforth's book High Speed Low Cost, he talks about Chome Plating.

" For a long time I nurtured a vague British prejustice against that tarty American practice of chroming things, especially wishbones which were supposed to be able to crack underneath the skin of chrome and deposit you unexpectedly in the mire.
Finally I flung it aside and had about $10 ( My compuer does not have a key for the English pound ) worth of chrome plating done on wishbones, rollbars, links and a few little miscellanious bits and pieces. "

So it looks like it was still accepted practice for Racing Cars in the early to mid '70s.

You cant really blame Blacky for chroming the suspension on his award winning car, 20 or so years earlyer...

Most of what can be seen does not even look similar.

If a man makes a special, that's fine, but perhaps you should just stick to the "Shish Kabob" name.

Just to give some more information...

My own 1928 Roadster is built on 1932 Frame Rails.

A 28/29 on a '32 chassis is a very common combination.

But they are still known as 28/29 Model A's.

Not quite what I was on about, and I really didn't expect to upset you.
It's just that round here either the specials look special and have their own name, or still look like the car that was the basis and use its name.
Must be different in the USofA, but we can't be expected to know that.

Well, techincally speaking, the Shish Kabob Spl. is not a Special.


Its a Modified, which is a different Racecar class.


And no, there are several Traditional Hot Rods in the UK that I know off, and they are named by their bodystyle there too.
