This car is known as the Phoenix Saab (or Phoenix chassis), and was first built in 1960, when it is thought to have been powered by a Mercury outboard motor powerhead, driving the front wheels through a Saab transaxle.
It was discovered engineless and in a derelict state in 1981 by Joe Puckett in El Toro, California. He restored it and fitted a Saab three-cylinder two-stroke engine, to make it reasonably typical of a Class H modified sports car of the 1960s. It was at this stage that it was christened "Phoenix", after the mythical bird that was supposed to burn itself, then rise rejuvenated from its ashes.
The car has competed in vintage race meetings, and is shown below with the body fitted.
