Well it's a Singer taking part in the driving tests that were often a crucial part of rallies between the wars.
It is probably a Singer 9 Le Mans and based on a few clues I guess it could be T. Leslie McDonald on the 1936 Scottish Rally

I was not going to bother with this but, if you say only the year was right, I will just ask if you really do think it is not a Singer.

This picture comes from a book about a make other than Singer, written by two well-known automotive journalists.  The picture is of a car by this other make.  All internet searches about the make of car I and these two journalists seem to believe is depicted above match.  So yes, I do really think it is not a Singer.

Triumph Gloria Southern Cross (SX) in Welsh Rally 1936 driven by Boughton (outright winner)?

You've got the car and the year...wrong rally and driver.  A hint--you are in the right geographical region for the rally (British Isles).   I'll lock it for you until your next reply!

*EDIT*--I can't find this thing online...it might take a bit of extra looking around, so locked for you, woodinsight, until you give it up...

I still can't find this actual photo in any of my sources but what I've found so far is -

Event - 1936 RAC Rally - elimination trials at Torquay.
Car - Triumph Gloria Southern Cross
Driver - still unsure but it could be one of three - J.A.G Howarth, L.P.Jaques or N. Hardcastle

You've got everything now but the driver, who, in my source, is none of the three you listed.  Still locked for you...

Well I've tried to narrow it down further as there were seven or eight Triumphs in the entry list.
The two most prominent drivers were Donald Healey and R. Dennis Poore (the well-known racing driver).
Could it be one of those?

Not one of those two, although Healey was prominently mentioned in my source.  I feel this wasn't a very well-known driver...still locked.

Thanks for the continuing lock.
The only other drivers of Triumphs in the 1936 RAC Rally that I can find are J.R. Weir, C.V. Wills and L. Boughton.

Ding ding ding!!!  J.R. Weir is the guy.  I'm giving you two points because this was a hard one. (I think)

Thank you.
It wasn't easy to find but I eventually found it in a magazine of 1936 in my library.
