It seems it might just be! The rest of the car, though, and the chassis, is an altogether different matter.

This is the Kanzler Coupé. Liberace owned a 1979 version.

Well I´d prefer the original Opel GT (Sold as the Buick GT in the USA)

You're absolutely right on all points: a) it is a Kanzler Coupé, b) one was owned by Liberace, and c) you really should prefer the original GT...

Solved - NEH 1438: Kanzler Coupe by Newport Beach Coachworks - 1979

And just to prove I haven't run out of red cars (although I hesitate to call it a 'nice red car'..!) what is this, who made it, what is it based on and from when does it date? For 1 point:

Google Image Search continues to raise its ugly head on AutoPuzzles.
For the sake of our newer members who may not be aware of past discussions on it, Google Image Search as a means of solving puzzles is banned on this website.

AutoPuzzles is primarily a game of automotive knowledge, not of who can copy and paste the quickest.

We ask all members to remember and respect this, and retain the right to ask puzzle-solvers how they came to their answer.

Have fun!

Yes, it's a 1979 Kanzler Coupe, but that's not its full name - and my info doesn't mention an Opel GT at all, nor any European car!

I'll lock it for you to look further into it and see if you can match what I have and give me all the info I asked for.

No problem. I just hope that what you asked for is correct information, that's all. Nothing I mentioned in what you deleted is, or was ever, part of the name of the car. As always, your puzzle, your call. We're here to have fun, after all . . . I'll sit the rest of this one out, just trying to keep incorrect information from being posted.

The coupe was designed by Ernest Kanzler and rendered in fiberglass and steel. Built over a lengthened Mercury Cougar chassis (other sources say that it's a Lincoln chassis), the Kanzler was powered by a Ford 351 V-8.
A run of 250 cars at $60,000 cars was planned, but obviously things didn’t work out quite as well as Kanzler may have hoped and only 2 cars were made.
It's evident that the central part of the car is an Opel GT bodyshell.

So far so good - all correct.
And who actually built the car (acc to my info)?

Understood.  I can only go by what I found on the Net, which I know is not always accurate by any stretch of imagination!  Once it's Solved and moved you have every chance to put right any errors!

Yes; by?
One of them was Liberace's (why am I not surprised by that?!) as below:

Are you going to tell me who by Jean-Marie H.?
If not I'll have to throw it open, but that would make it a very easy point indeed for someone else...

Thanks for pointing out that this is a repost darkface, which I wasn't aware of (my search simply for "Kanzler" came up with nothing...)

I'm still giving Jean-Marie H. the chance to earn his point thought by giving me the remaining answers to my original questions: who built the cars and when?

OK, well Jean-Marie H. has had nearly 2 weeks to find the builder now so time is about to run out.

I'll keep it locked only for 24 more hours and after that it's open to anyone who can tell me the builder of these cars, which is all that is required to complete the questions and award the point.

OK, Kanzler Coupes were built by Newport Coachworks in Santa Ana, California. I think it's still a matter of some conjencture how many were actually built - there were some slight variations in bodywork and at least three different colors shown, but two is the generally agreed on figure. They should have left that poor unsuspecting Opel GT alone!

OK, thanks for that fyreline.
But since the puzzle was still locked for Jean-Marie H. until 6.19 pm UK time tomorrow Monday I'll have to award the point to him for identifying the car correctly.

I'm moving it to solved and you're free to re-post what you said before when you admitted to thinking about getting one of these!

The puzzle is also being merged with the original Kanzler Coupe puzzle.

My apologies - I should have noted your deadline more closely.  In any case, I am pleased with the outcome.

The Kanzler Coupe seems to be one of those eminently forgettable cars . . . every auto quiz site I've ever seen seems to rediscover it every few years. I'd be willing to bet we haven't seen the last of it yet.
