I think it's Frank A. Garbutt in his homemade car.

I think you are correct.

You are correct. Frank A. Garbutt driving his homemade car against Barney Oldfield in his Peerless Green Dragon, at Agricultural Park in Los Angeles on December 16, 1904. Garbutt was a movie pioneer, inventor, industrialist, and “one of the most prominent citizens of Los Angeles in the late 19th and early 20th Century”.

Maybe I should have gone with his portrait, instead.
