So I'm still no wiser at the moment but I'll keep searching.  :-\

G. Reed Ford Special also known as the "Pratley Skate".
Warwick Pratley won the 1951 Australian Grand Prix at Narrogin with this car (see photo below).

I have no idea what the car is in the background.  :-\

I have a different name, but you found the car:
There were different specials, all similar.
This one is a replica of the one in your pic:

Perhaps the puzzle car was known as the "Red Skate"?
Thank you for the point. :)
My information came from the Official 50-Race History of the Australian Grand Prix published in 1986.

I'm not sure about his real name and since it's just a (nice) replica it was not that relevant after all.
You found the right car and from a magazine article I found that "Skate III" was also called the "White Car"...
There is another So-Cal Special by G.Reed...this one:

I'm starting my puzzles in the experts from now on because I've not seen a rookie for ages and they simply languish in that section before being promoted.

If you're familiar with this car, let me know for a shiny special point!

I've just noticed that the wheels are those bolt-on wires which were mainly fitted to mundane vehicles. Is this a special built on the frame of a family saloon car from the '30s?

"The Red Car", I reckon.
Inventive bunch weren't they!

Yes it is, though sadly this is a replica of the original which was lost some time ago. Well done, the point is duly yours!

I actually was lucky enough to see this one in the flesh and in action around Bathurst back in 2006:

Since I don't mind looking stupid on an international website, do you know what that chromed metal is doing on the nearside of the car? The exhaust is on the offside (driver's side), but there is an oddly-shaped tube from front to rear of the car.

That would be the other exhaust! Very stylish out back...  ;)
