I'm curious...
« on: November 14, 2007, 12:17:29 PM »
...found these picture among a heap of old photographs taken by my grandfather in the States at some point during the Fifties. As I've never been an expert on American cars of that period, I'm just wondering how many of the cars in the pictures you can identify just from the top of your heads? This is not intended to be a puzzle, so there will be no points awarded - just good old fame.

NB: Big pictures...

Without consulting anything other than my memory, here goes:

Top: 1958 Edsel

Middle, 1st Row: 1955 Chevrolet, 1953-1955 Studebaker, 1962? Chebrolet Biscayne Wagon; 2nd Row: 1955 Chevrolet, Chevrolet Corvair?, 1956-1957 Mercury, 1957 Ford

Bottom: 1952-1954 Ford, 1960-1962 Valiant/Plymouth Valiant or 1961-1962 Dodge Lancer, 1960-1961 Chevrolet, 1959 Ford

If you are underwhelmed by my memory, please be aware that I wasn't born until 1980.

From picture #2...The white Chevy wagon is a '61, and I think it's a Bel Air; there's a '61 Plymouth station wagon; a late'50's-early ''60's Renault Dauphine; a 1960-61 Rambler Classic wagon; I don't see a Corvair, but I do see a couple of VW Beetles; a '49 Pontiac Chieftan[?]; in one of the other rows, there's a 1960 Pontiac 2 door; another Rambler wagon, probably a 1960 or so.  Lots of station wagons and 53-56 Chevys in the pic; did anybody mention  the Ford Falcon... It's either a '60 or '61.

Photo must've been taken in 1961 or so...

There's a '55-'56 Dodge station wagon next to that Black fastback Pontiac, and I see a white '59 Plymouth sedan  just beyond it...all from pic #2

Pic # 3, from left to right...
1. 52-54 Ford
2. 61-62 Dodge Lancer, although might be a Plymouth Valiant, hard to tell...
3. 60 Chevy Bel Air conv.
4. 59 Ford conv.
5. 60 Chevy Bel Air...60 Dodge Polara in front of it...
6. Red 61 Dodge
7. 57 Plymouth
8. 62 Plymouth
9. 55 Ford
10. Looks like an International school bus from late '50's-early '60's
11. 60 Chevy , probably another Bel Air
12. 58 Ford
13. 55 Chevy
14. 60 Ford conv.

The Corvair (if it is one) is what I believe the red car to be in front of the black Studebaker

Could be, not much to work with from that angle...where were these pictures taken?

That old Pontiac and new Rambler parked side-by-side sure offers a dramatic illustration of just how much cars changed over a 10 year period, doesn't it?

A little research shows that Pigeon Hill School is located close to Huntington Station near Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY. I didn't know that, but it's not a big surprise as my grandfather's brother-in-law lives in that area.

Move it to solved, I guess. The cars are mostly ID's, except those that are mostly obscured and require conjecture.
