This is one of the Project XX cars, which eventually became the Rover 800 coupe. It was aimed at the American market but the project was dropped when Rover realised that no one wanted to buy Rovers (or Sterlings, or whatever they called them at that point) in the States anymore.

Exactly, yes.
The whole project grew out of the Rover CCV and when you look at what they started with then what they eventually produced it gives you an insight into why the whole thing went completely pear-shaped and Rover is no more...

I must admit to being a bit of a fan of the Rover 800 series as it turned out, very much a throwback to the era of the 'barge' although even I struggle to find the point of a huge luxury saloon with FWD and rubbish suspension.... as usual, the gestation period between conception and finished product took it's toll rather dramatically!
