I've seen something similar to this in the past ; it was based on a Bond Bug ... Has this one anything to do with the little threewheeler from the UK?

Trimuter VW based; the fifth and last trimuter that I built. The body was purchased from a fabricator in California, which is no longer in business.  This has a 650, liquid cooled, Honda motorcycle engine. The Trimuter to the left was from Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA. ...  I am currently working on a new 3-wheeler.  This one will be two wheels in the front and have a motorcycle rear wheel and engine in the back.

The Morton 3 was offerred in the early 80's as an alternative to the many boxy homogenous offerrings of Detroit and Japan by the Morton Car Co. It was likely  a development of another kit called the XK-1 from the Texas company, Western Front.
Distinguishing features between the two include an intake on the rear fender of the Morton and a different roofline, the original from Western Front has a more squared-off hatch section in the rear. It may be that Morton acquired the molds after Western Front folded in 1980 or so, regardless the
similarities between the two are hard to ignore.

Nice solve, PJ!

A bit more detail in this news article from the December 11, 1983 Boca Raton News.

It seems this car was slated to receive a Lotus engine (or, so says Mr. Morton - who also likens his efforts to Henry Ford's): ;D
