Small sports racer but a very important one.
For one point identify the make, year, driver and what was significant about this particular car.

A shot in the dark. Could this be the first Buckler built in New Zealand?

No not a Buckler.
It is the forerunner of a famous racing make but this one carried a different name.

I'm afraid not but you're very close with the year....

Those look like Ford wheels and the shape and small size of the car lead me to think it may be a version of a Mk IV Lotus with an 1172 side valve engine. :-\

It is basically Ford-based with a 1172cc engine.
The car wasn't built by the man at the wheel but was the car he raced before he launched his own famous racecar brand.
All I need for the point is the name of the car and the year.

Is it the Lolita from 1956, the first car made by Eric and Graham Broadley which was sold on to Alan Wershat, who changed its name from Broadley Special to Lolita?

It's not that I'm afraid (nothing to do with the Broadleys) but you're getting closer.......

It is the CSM, built by Chapman Sports Motors of Hastings, Sussex.
The other part of the question I need answering is - who is the driver of the car?
Locked for you.

It must be Frank Nichols, who developed his Elva car out the CSM, with which he had quite a bit of racing success after replacing his Lotus with it.
I believe the CSM dated from 1954.
