Solved - MJW #717 - Appleton Jowett Special 1952
« on: December 04, 2011, 12:53:09 PM »
A British sports car but which company was responsible for its construction, the year it was built and what car was it based on?
One point for the correct answer.
Apologies for the poor image but it's the only one I've seen.

This is the Appleton Jupiter Special from around 1952. Based on a Jowett Javelin engine but uprated to Jupiter spec on a tubular chassis with Jupiter suspension and wheels. The aluminium body was built (presumably) by Appleton of Goldhawk Road, London. Registration number KGK55

KGK is a London registration, which commenced issue, I believe, in December 1948!

You're right, it's a 1948 reg. Presumably it takes this number from the Javelin that supplied the engine, I can't think of any other reason for this anomaly.

I'm glad you got this one barrett, being a Jowett expert!
It looks to me as if the Reg. No. is KGK 98?

Here's a period sales ad from 1953
