This is actually the second car Dad built, but there is no doubt that it aroused considerable interest. The text of this article in the Leicester Mercury is as follows :-"What is the limit of motoring economy? Mr. Howard Boys, of Halstead-street, Leicester, whose home is at Weedon, has reduced the costs of his single-seater car to ½d. a mile. His interesting three-wheeler is the smallest and cheapest car in Leicester. Here are some of its achievements. Although home-made it has covered ten thousand miles of trouble free running in twelve months. Its 1½ h.p. engine is ten years old, has a two-speed gear and does 100 miles to the gallon. It cost Mr. Boys £4 to make and, as insurance and tax only cost another £5 per annum, what could be cheaper? And practical? Well. Mr. Boys goes to Weedon and back in it every weekend and averages 24 miles an hour.As the picture shows, he has streamlined his 200lb. model with plywood. To start it he has to wind a strap round the starting wheel and pull, after the spinning top fashion. It has no reverse but that is easy; you just pick up the tail and turn it round. Leicester was well served with newspapers and on the same day that the article above was printed the Leicester Evening Mail produced a similar article but rather better illustrated as can be seen below. The text is as follows:-A HOME-MADE CAR WHICH COST £4 - This little car built by its owner-inventor, Mr. Howard Boys, of Halstead-street, Leicester has already proved itself practical. It has now covered 10,000 miles of trouble-free running. The car has a 1½ h.p. engine, and does 100 miles to the gallon. Tax and insurance cost £5 per annum. Mr. Boys makes the journey to his home at Weedon at week-ends at an average speed of 24 m.p.h.
