Which car is this, what chassis and engine does it have and the year please

It's the Appleton Special.
Maserati chassis
Riley engine

The year is difficult.  The special was built in 1934 and progressively developed.  This body dates to 1938.
But the car in the background is a postwar A-Type Connaught so I'll go for the photo being 1953

That's the car D-Type.
I have the original date of build as 1935.
Not sure when the photo was taken but it was certainly circa 1953.
