Jaguar based indeed.
Do you know who built it and what model of Jaguar it was based on for a point?

I'd hazard a guess it was based on an early XJ6/12;
still looking for who might have built it...

It's earlier than an XJ6/12 and I believe the Jaguar base was heavily modified.
Anyway, I'll lock it for you to give you a chance to see if you can find the answer.

Thanks woodinsight.
Perhaps it's based on a Mk1 2.4/3.4 then?
Anycase I've drawn a complete blank searching for it so best if you open it up again to give others a chance!

No, it's not based on a Mk 1.
Open to all again.

Not an XK150 or an S-Type.

Okay, I'm going to award a point for whoever guesses what the base model Jaguar of this car is and another one to who can complete the story of this unusual car.

Not Mk II or C-Type!

The car is based on a production Jaguar model, not some unknown prototype.
May the best man win!

Bingo!
It's based on a Jaguar Mk VII - one point for Carnut.
Now who can complete the rest of the story?

This one needs a little help to solve it.

There's no easy clue I can give to the person's name who commissioned it.

It was constructed by a Jaguar dealer for the owner in 1958/59.

So the name is the GxxCxTT JAGUAR

Not Gilcott or Gawcott but you're both quite close.

We now narrow it down to GxxCOTT....

Welcome to AutoPuzzles 309gvt.
That was an interesting and unusual car you owned and thank you for the extra information.
Were Byatts of Fenton coachbuilders and do you know who designed the car?

Welcome Weesarah!

You and your father certainly own an interesting car.
I'm still trying to find out who built the coachwork and who designed it.
Is the car still painted blue?

It would be great if you find the time to post some recent photos of the car.
You are presumably familiar with where I found the original article......

Hi, the car was built by Byatts in 1953 and road registered in 1959. It is still blue and still a much loved talking point! I will see what photos I have of it :)

Title: SOLVED: Djetset 920 - Grocott Jaguar MK VI
Post by: Djetset on December 08, 2018, 08:04:46 AM
Exactly ten years ago today to the date, I stumbled across Auto Puzzles for the very first time whilst searching on-line for an obscure car (a Cisitalia 505 from memory). A decade on, this site has helped to further my car knowledge extensively, whilst also causing many hours of wasted frustration and only gaining a mere 44 points on average per year! I really must try harder  :)

So, to mark my 10th anniversary of joining Auto Puzzles today, I am offering a special two points puzzle here, with one point to name the creator of this rather hideous car, plus another point to correctly identify this car's base. Good luck.

Yes, it is the Grocott Jaguar by John Grocott, based on a Jaguar MKVII chassis, and built to Grocott's (unusual) design in Stoke-on-Trent, UK.

Well done, two points to you, and if this can now be merged please ( https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2011-39/solved-mjw-282-grocott-jaguar-1959/ ) as Wendax kindly pointed-out that this was a repost, despite it not showing-up on a Search when I looked originally. Thanks.
