Not Alfa or Caddy.
All the suggestions are of words too long! (it's less than three letters)

VW?
Correct! It's a VW coupe made by VW Coupes of Sutton, Surrey.
I just need a year to complete it.

Is it only called VW or has it a VW engine as well?  :o

And yes: great puzzling here these days. Thanks to djetset and his 'bambino' mystery as well! :applause:

According to woodinsight's reply #7 it had Ford underpinnings, which I assumed to mean the engine as well.

Any idea what 'VW' stood for in this instance?

I'm glad you enjoy the puzzles - there's many more to come yet!

The VW coupe had Ford mechanicals and was intended for production but I believe this one was the only one built.
In fact it is the only photo I have ever seen of the car.

I have no idea what VW stood for.
Perhaps it was initials of the person behind the project.

I'm trying to clear some of my recalcitrant puzzles before I post a Sports Racing pt. 3 and perhaps a commercial vehicle/bus group puzzle as well as some more obscure cars.

Through some convoluted thought process I've arrived back at this puzzle  after realising "Hey, I've seen that before" (just a year too late)

A quick comparison to my puzzle #216 (http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=18132.0), the Turandot special, shows them to be almost identical! Almost, because there are several detail changes, not least the fact that the Turandot uses MG running gear and the VW Coupe is Ford-based. The Turandot has a small bonnet scoop and a wiper where the VW doesn't, and has disc wheels with hubcaps in place of the VW's Easiclean items. I think it's safe to say they are two different vehicles using the same type of shell, which means VW Coupes produced at least one other copy though presumably in fairly quick succession as the Turandot is also registered in 1961, also in Surrey.

I'm quite interested in chasing this one up, assuming the 'VW' name was indeed taken from the initials of the original builder, how would one go about tracking down someone who lived in Sutton in 1961 with the initials V. W. ? Country records or something?

I DON'T think these two should be merged, by the way!

What a fantastic find Barrett - you definitely had an eagle eye on this one!

I still have no idea what the VW stands for - I was only guessing that it may have been the initials of the man behind the car.
I have found an address in Sutton (see below) where the company was based so that may help in tracking down the company.
