Through some convoluted thought process I've arrived back at this puzzle after realising "Hey, I've seen that before" (just a year too late)
A quick comparison to my puzzle #216 (
http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=18132.0), the Turandot special, shows them to be almost identical! Almost, because there are several detail changes, not least the fact that the Turandot uses MG running gear and the VW Coupe is Ford-based. The Turandot has a small bonnet scoop and a wiper where the VW doesn't, and has disc wheels with hubcaps in place of the VW's Easiclean items. I think it's safe to say they are two different vehicles using the same type of shell, which means VW Coupes produced at least one other copy though presumably in fairly quick succession as the Turandot is also registered in 1961, also in Surrey.
I'm quite interested in chasing this one up, assuming the 'VW' name was indeed taken from the initials of the original builder, how would one go about tracking down someone who lived in Sutton in 1961 with the initials V. W. ? Country records or something?
I DON'T think these two should be merged, by the way!
