Admittedly a hard one but perhaps the Experts can have a guess

It's British, right?
I've just been searching but I can't find the picture I have of this. I think it's a front-end view....

I'm hedging my bets here but I think this is the Calvert which was built in 1947. It was a front-wheel drive car built by a Mr Kit Calvert although I imagine the 'Kit' part wasn't his birth name. If I remember correctly it had an air-cooled 'twin' in the front and was wooden-bodied but that might be imagined. I don't know if it was a one-off, whether or not it was put into even limited production or what happened to the prototype. I have a feeling it was pictured in one of the classic car mags in the early '80s but my office (spare room) has had a bit of a landslide so I can't check. It's quite an intriguing thing, that's for sure.

You've nearly done it again!
However this car has a specific name and although Kit Calvert was the driving force behind the car it was built by a specific company in a town that was very well known for a certain product.
Year 1947 is correct.
My source is also located somewhere in your landslide of magazines!
You obviously know the car so I'll lock it for you until your next reply.
Happy hunting!

Found it! The company name was The Dales Motor Company. A consortium of businessmen in Wensleydale sank £10,000 into the project but only the one car was made. T.C. 'Kit' Calvert kept the car until the early '80s. It was bought for £250 at auction in 1984.

Sorry, I had it in my head that it was the Calvert. In reality it's the Curlew. I promise not to make it so hard next time (presuming I get anything right, that is).

I really thought that this one would be around a while longer but you managed to solve it pretty quickly.
Well done and another point for you.

I'll add another photo and some more information shortly.

The following is additional information as promised -

The unique Curlew automobile built in 1947 was a two-stroke twin cylinder car with wood framing and front-wheel drive. It was built by The Dales Motor Co., a consortium of Wensleydale businessmen headed by T.C. 'Kit' Calvert.
Mr Calvert was locally known as 'Mr. Wensleydale' and was associated with saving the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, makers of the famous Wensleydale cheese. (if you are familiar with the cartoon characters Wallace & Gromit, you will recognise the Wensleydale cheese connection)
The development of the car was carried out in secret, away from the eyes of the established manufacturers. It was rumoured that that the design was partly the work of a Spitfire aircraft engineer.
A factory was planned at Newton Aycliffe if production had gone ahead but in the event only one prototype was built.
It was registered GAJ 546 and was obviously a running prototype.
The clutch proved to be unsatisfactory and further development was halted after a considerable sum of money had been spent.
The streamlined bodywork was made of plywood on an ash frame and the air-cooled two-stroke engine was specially designed for the car. The car was nominally a four-seater but room in the rear was somewhat limited.
The Curlew almost ended up on a bonfire but was rescued by the Ripon Gazette newspaper as a piece of local history. An appeal was launched to finance restoration and keep the car in the district.
That was the last I heard of the car in 1984 and I haven't heard any further information since.

The only other (poor) photo I have -

Nice story! Is the state we see after it was rescued from the fire, resp. was it already in the fire?

The car didn't actually end up on a bonfire, was rescued before that untimely end and the picture you see was the state of the car when it was pulled out of its hiding place. Some body panels (on the right-hand side) were missing but the interior was largely intact complete with instrument panel.

Well, I'm sure you'll be pleased to find out that the Curlew still survives!
Here's a couple of dodgy photos I managed to get, and some info bringing the story a little more up to date. I knew I'd seen it somewhere before!

Thanks barrett.
Let's hope that it will fully rebuilt one day although the engine may prove difficult to put back into running order as it was specifically built for the car (unless spares or a spare unit has been found).

I hope you don't mind but I've tried to enhance your photo even further.
Don't know if it's an improvement until I see the posted results.

It's part of a collection called Momence Motor Museum:
