Who is this happy-looking man, and what is his connection with the vehicle he is sitting in?

I'm very curious about it...

It's Pietro Frua sitting in one of his first 'car' designs, circa 1946 (could be '48 - my bad memory again)

Good job he got the hang of scale for his later cars then...!

The only problem is: it's not him!

Ohh, my sources suggest that this is Pietro Frua sitting in an early car of his creation, c.1948.

For the moment I am awarding Barrett the point, unless anyone can proved that this is not Frua.

I quote the Frua page:

"Ein von Pietro Frua konstruiertes Kinderauto Anfang der 40-er Jahre. Bei dem darin sitzenden Mann handelt es sich nicht, wie von Chapman (1987) angegeben, um Pietro Frua."

translated:
~ Kid car constructed by Pietro Frua in the early 40s. The man sitting inside is not Pietro Frua as stated by Chapman (1987).

This pic shows Pietro Frua in 1965: (the man sitting in the kid car is apparently older in the early 40s  ;))

Gosh, it sure looks like a younger Frua.  I'll keep this on open for definative proof, or otherwise.
