For a point, do you know what this is, and what it was called?
-
Experts?
-
The Africar?
-
No, not an Africar.
-
early Andorplastics prototype?
-
Not that one either!
-
Now a puzzler for the Pros...
-
It reminds me of a De Lorean prototype I saw...
-
Nothing to do with De Lorean.
-
An aircraft connection?
-
Not directly.
-
a technology test mule?
-
Yes!
-
Innes Sekura?
-
Panther built a mule very similar to this to test the running gear of the Solo II
-
Neither of the above.
-
Test mule for a British car?
-
Yes :D
-
Jaguar?
-
Yes!
-
Test mule for the XJ 12?
-
Can you give me a more details? Locked to you until your next reply (and remember that I am also looking for what this was called!)
-
I can only guess that this test mule was used at the time when the XJ13 racing experiment was already stoppped and a V12 limousine, larger than the XJ6, was planned. But since I have no idea about the name (if Saab hadn't already used that, I would call it "the toad" ;) ), I'm happy to have pushed this puzzle a bit and leave the rest to someone more capable of doing that. ;D
-
Nothing to do with the XJ 13 specifically, but you were on the right track with the XJ 12, so worth following that line of thinking.
Jaguar's name for this vehicle sort of reflects what you see in the photo, if this helps.
-
Seagull?
-
I know Seagull's are odd-looking beasts, but...
No, not that; it's a more familiar automotive term.
-
Pick-up?
-
No, not that one, but it is a regular automotive term such as pick-up.
-
Lorry?
-
Van?
-
No.

Mule?
-
Scout Car?
-
Tow truck?
-
No, it's less of a commericial vehicle title than the last few suggestions.
-
Coupe?
-
Estate?
-
No.
Whilst I'm on, I should just a remind all puzzlers that we are also looking for which specific Jaguar model this was a test mule for as well. Thanks.
-
Shooting brake?
-
Very quaint, but not the name Jaguar gave it.
-
Hearse?
-
I know you're a busy man but.........:bump:
-
Forgive the long delay, but only just out of hospital after a longer stay thn expected.
Thankfully I didn't need a hearse though, and this is not one of these either!

Glad to hear you are on the mend Djetset, sometimes these things take longer than expected.
Here's another one to keep you smiling - milk float?
-
Thanks, but it's not a milk float!
-
I can't find any reference to this vehicle in any Jaguar books so far.
Anyway, one last guess for the moment - pickup?
-
Saloon?
-
Buggy?
-
Discard my last guess of pick-up, I noticed that it has already been discounted
Taxi perhaps?
-
You can all rest easy now as Wendax has got it, as this development test mule for XJ40 was affectionately called 'The Buggy' by Jaguar. Well done.
Here's a colour photo of the beast.
