Solved: Vamos a la playa
« on: July 29, 2011, 08:53:43 AM »
It's summertime, so I picked some fine beaches for you, where you would like to spend your time much more than in a factory. To make that clear, I show you some places where cars were built. Each of the beaches is connected to one of the factories by a very specific car. For one point each, you must identify the connecting car as well as name the connected beach and factory. Have fun!

Here are the beaches:

Beach 1 : Saint-Marc sur Mer, near St Nazaire, France. Featured in Jacques Tati's film "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot" (Mr Hulot's Holiday).
Connected with Factory #3 : Salmson factory at Boulogne-Billancourt.
Mr Hulot's car was a Salmson VAL 3.

Hooray, the first one is identified!

The eagle-eyed puzzler could identify part of the Jacques Tati statue at the edge of the platform in the upper left corner of the beach picture.

Factory 5   Home of eccentric racing driver Count Louis Zborowski. His giant-engined "Chitty Bang Bang" cars were built there, as was "Babs"

Beach 2    Molison's Seafarer just after taking off from Pendine Sands

Connection   Count Louis Zborowski's "Babs" was used in J.G. Parry-Thomas's attempt at the land speed record at Pendine Sands in 1927

The connection is correct and you have identified the Stanley factory as well. But you didn't find the right identification for beach #5, although you are very close. Locked for you until your next reply to identify beach #5 as well as the connecting car. The year isn't right either.

That is the right connection, the right factory and the right car. Even the town the beach belongs to is correct, but what is the name of the beach? Locked for you to find out.

Vamos 3 is the Dune du Pyla near Arcachon in south-west France, the highest sand dune in Europe.

Factory 2 is the Panhard works in Avenue d'Ivry, Paris.

The car that links them is the Citroën 2CV Sahara - that's the 4x4 model with two engines, one in the front and one in the rear. These were built in the Panhard factory in Paris (Citroën had a financial interest in Panhard from the mid 1950s onwards), and in a publicity stunt in 1961, a 2CV Sahara became the first car to be driven to the top of the Dune du Pyla under its own power.

You think right. This point concludes this summer fun puzzle. I hope you enjoyed puzzling it as much as I did enjoy its creation. Thank you, gentlemen.
