Is it from a "well-known" automaker or is it a homebuilt?

Getting close, though this car was apparently never called Moskvich.

it was the first prototype of civilian jeep in Russia studied by MZMA: the 415 with canopy anda the 416 all closed metal body (the first SUV!).
I've two sources that calls it Moskvich-415 Pilot (1959)

Um... problem with those Russian sources is I can't confirm if you are right or wrong. You clearly identified the right car as far as I can tell, but I have it simply as AZKL 4x4. Any Russian speakers out there?

Any way I give you one point.

I don't speak russian - but my source says:
AZLK (АЗЛК - Автомобильный завод имени Ленинского Комсомола in Russian) was a Russian automobile factory (Moscow), the maker of the Moskvitch brand.

One of the best sites on Russian automotive history says this was first called Moskvitch 4x4. It was a prototype, built in 1958, reminiscent of Willys Jeep. Then the military tested it and with their recommendations updated prototypes were built, callede Moskvitch 415.
