PAFW - Who's That Girl? - Lulu / Renault R10
« on: July 01, 2011, 05:43:47 AM »
Here is a mom with her youngsters, taking a stroll. One of them would achieve international fame, later in life. I've been generous, and inserted an arrow into the pic, so you know which person you're working to identify.

Your job is to identify the mystery child, and to post a reply that includes picture of her during her professional career, with an automobile; her name, and the name of the automobile.

Easy, no? As always, only a complete answer will score the point.

Enjoy!

A shot in the dark: Petula Clark?
If so, what about this Turner 950?

... I must say that the picture has a forties look (and she'd be 10 or older then, but let's try that).

Beats me how he recognised her too.
You've been on that distant planet again though, Ray!
Scottish lass Lulu (real name Marie Lawrie) has been a fixture here for over 45 years; she once represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, was married to Robin Gibb (or was it Maurice?) of the Bee Gees, has acted in a film with Sidney Poitier, and has had countless hit songs.
Must say though I never knew she has any interest in cars..
She's still a regular on TV and the Radio - and doesn't look much different from when she was 16... it's just not fair!

Well done! (Though it's 1965). This picture with a proper British automobile would also have been acceptable:

It was Maurice. Lulu was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie on November 3, 1945 in Glasgow. The puzzle picture was captioned: A four-year-old Lulu clutches her mother's hand while on holiday in Rothesay Bay.

SACO's picture is from 1965, showing Ms. Lawrie with her first car, a Renault automatic, which she bought despite failing her driving test

As for my not knowing Lulu, I might say, with all due respect, that in 1968 I was maybe too busy to watch the Eurovision. I seldom watched it without some friends and a few joints, I must say. Without this and a good laugh it might soon turn unbearable.

It's pretty unbearable from the start even with the friends and joints!
Must say I found her song absolutely awful.  I have a feeling it won though or maybe just came 2nd..

Boom-Bang-a-Bang? Absolute dreck.

I liked her cover of Neil Diamond's The Boat That I Row, and Oh Me Oh My is still a favorite. Aretha Franklin liked the latter so much, she decided to record a version of her own.

Great band arrangement, but the singer could be someone else IMHO.. Aretha gives shivers.

While I give Aretha her props, she often looked to other singers to identify the great songs to cover. She also covered Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacher man, proving again that it's easy to do great soulful renditions of songs, once a young British lass shows you the way.  ;)

Dusty Springfiled is my favourite female voice, so I'm a little biased on that subject.

Quite often I like cover of songs more than its original interpreter's version.

Example: (I like Campbell's as well!)

That's nice. I have taken my lumps elsewhere for stating that I prefer her version of I Heard it Through the Grapevine above all others.
