This is Walter the Bus, a 13'2" (about 3 metres) tall VW bus built on the chassis of an airport fire tender.
It is shown en route to the Burning Man Festival in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
Although it looks like an old photo, it isn't.  The photo was taken in 2010!

Walter the Bus is based on a 1963 Walter Motor Truck Company vehicle, which was later converted to an Airport Fire and Rescue Truck and saw service at Luke Air Force Base, amongst other places.

It was the brainchild of Kirk Strawn, a Phoenix doctor and entrepreneur.

It was just the right wheelbase to make a 2:1 scale VW bus and is powered by an 844 cu in V8!!
