NEH 942 - The Big Bus Puzzle
« on: February 09, 2011, 01:34:11 PM »
I like buses, and it would seem there are other Puzzlers who like them too.
So here's a puzzle specially for them: there is 1 point available for identifying the bus's chassis and engine maker together with when it dates from, or if the date is not possible to ascertain then either when it was in service or when it was first proposed as a concept.  I don't know all the dates myself however so in those cases I'll accept the answer without it, but if I have it and it is possible to ascertain it then I will need it!
There will also be a bonus point on offer for whoever can identify the bodybuilder.
And the points for each puzzle can be shared: it doesn't have to be the same puzzler who identifies both the make of bus and the bodybuilder, so give your answers carefully!
Good hunting!

Glad you like them guys.
Something tells me neither the Rookies nor the Experts are going to get all of these, so the Pro's will get a chance.
However, Otto, I think I know which ones you know and I would bet my bottom dollar they are the ones that go first!

#7 is an Austin - a 1950 K8 in fact (that front is oh so familiar!) but it's not bodied by Duple.
#22 is indeed an AEC (which one and when from?) but it's not a Burlingham body.

I have added 1 point for the Austin (I'm going to add them as we go along otherwise feel they would never be allocated if I wait for everything to be solved..) so there are still points begging for the bodybuilders of these two and I need to know what model of AEC and its build-date.

Actually the numbers refer to the picture above!
So it's #12 that looks like an insect and #13 that has a grille that looks like a Bedford?
But you'll be pleased to know that it's not a Bedford though...

This puzzle seems to have stumped the Roookies somewhat with only 1 point out of a possible 72 being awarded so far, so let's see if the Experts know as much about buses as they do about cars!

It was indeed operated by the Fifth Avenue Coach Company but not as a sightseeing bus and neither was it manufactured by Yellow Coach!

That's right!
It's the nuclear-powered bus "Cyclops" from the 1976 spoof disaster movie "The Big Bus".
So that one is solved - doubt if we'll get to the bottom of a bodybuilder for that one: unless someone knows better?!

Maybe this one is by Yellow Truck & Coach Manufacturing Company?

#27 wasn't made by Yellow anything!
#4 is again a Fifth Avenue Coach Company-operated bus, and it is from about 1930 (very slightly later actually) - but what make and model is it?

The tractor is indeed an Opel Blitz, but that's only part of what I was looking for; Opel had nothing to do with the trailer.
So who made the bus bit and when?!

Bus 17 is a Mercedes-Benz O 10000 from about 1937, being operated as a postbus by the Deutsche Reichspost. This monster had a 6-cylinder diesel engine of 683 cu in (11.2 litres) developing 150 hp at 1700 rpm, and propelling the machine to a dizzying top speed of 40 mph.

So far as I can gather, the body was built at the Daimler-Benz Gaggenau plant.
