I can't find much detail on this, but the puzzle picture appeared in our old friend
Popular Mechanics Monthly in January 1934 under the heading "Trailer with single wheel carries thousand pounds".
TRAILER WITH SINGLE WHEEL CARRIES THOUSAND POUNDS
Capable of 1,000-pound loads, a new safety trailer for automobiles has only one wheel. It may be attached quickly by coupling to two points of the rear bumpers and the steering mechanism without using tools. The trailer backs and steers with the car. Standard wheel and tire are used.
And that's all it says, but hand-written on the page which has been scanned and posted online is "Developed by Robert J. Mason, Los Angeles, California" with the address "1820 South Hope Street".
