How are these two connected?

A man and a woman. Both earned a living in public. One is a legend, the other, largely forgotten. At one point in time, they came together, for a common purpose. And yes, it included automobiles, in a very important way.

Who are they, and how are they connected.

Be sure to answer all parts of the question, if you'd like the point.

The gentleman ( not John Ford ) is exiting an automobile, but it's not part of this puzzle.

The connection in question is very automotive

The stogie in the gentleman's mouth is not unusual. There were many pictures taken of him, throughout his career, with a cigar.

Are they Barney Oldfield and Patsy Ruth Miller?

If I'm right then the connection is the film 'The First Auto' - Set in Maple City Michigan.
