Cars & Dolls #8 / Linda Thorson & a Lotus Europa
« on: July 12, 2011, 04:11:48 AM »
Always second best, though not really. The first would be forgotten, in the context of this fem's realm. The second would always be first, in many minds.

My, I'm being generous with that lead-in

She was trained as a singer, and did record some numbers for sale, but is better known for her performances in another field

When I first saw this picture, and the clues in the preamble, I thought that it might be Linda Thorson. It’s a fairly atypical hairstyle, but then Otto has an uncanny ability to find photos of people that don’t look very much like them. I have since found a website (only one!) which reckons that this picture is of her, so let’s run with it! ;D

Canadian actress Linda Thorson has had a long and quite distinguished career playing a wide variety of parts on stage and screen, but strangely enough, for people of my sort of age, she is best remembered for quite a brief appearance, at the age of 20, playing the character Tara King in the iconic 1960s British spy-fi series The Avengers.

As assistant to debonair crimefighter John Steed (Patrick Macnee), poor Tara had a tough act to follow, in the form of his previous assistant Emma Peel, played by the incomparable Diana Rigg. Of course comparisons were inevitably made, and some critics were not kind to Miss King. This was perhaps unfair, as the two characters were quite different. Tara King was more vulnerable, and less experienced and capable than the indomitable Mrs Peel. Perhaps more human too – Mrs Peel was more of a fantasy character – and Tara was a good foil for Steed. And you have to ask why, if she supposedly wasn’t very good, this is the role Linda Thorson is probably most remembered for.

But anyway, as for cars, she drove several, but was most often seen in a Lotus Europa. I later found that it was red, but we only had a black-and-white television when the series first aired – colour sets were available, but were incredibly expensive in the UK in the 1960s. Or for something more exotic, in a couple of episodes she drove a convertible AC 428.

As for the "first and second" mentioned in the puzzle preamble, there’s more that could be said, but I’d better wait to see if I’ve got this wrong first….. :)

Well done!

I also only saw The Avengers in Black in White during their original run. Didn't have a color set until well into the 1970's.

I've never been a television addict, but The Avengers was one programme I would never miss when I was a kid, so this puzzle was something of a gift.

I was just going to add that, by the time Mrs Peel appeared in 1965, it may not be so widely known that the show had already been running for several years, and she was not John Steed's first partner in crime fighting.

Previously there was a character called Cathy Gale played by Honor Blackman (usually clad in leather), and a few appearances of Venus Smith, played by Julie Stevens. But Steed's first partner was not a woman at all, but a medic called Dr David Keel, played by Ian Hendry. In fact at the very start, Keel was the main character, and Steed had second billing, but this became reversed, and by the end of the first series, Steed had done a couple of episodes solo, without Keel.

I don't think these early programmes would have been seen much outside the UK, and certainly not in America. They were shot in monochrome on 405-line videotape, which (so I have read) was not compatible with the NTSC standard used by US networks. The shows with Mrs Peel were always intended to be screened in America as well, and these were shot on 35-mm film, which gave better quality and compatibility, and allowed more creative camera work and editing.

Pictures: John Steed with Cathy Gale, Venus Smith, and Dr David Keel, with a gratuitous Ford Anglia thrown in for good measure. 8)

I must be dreaming... ;)

I was going to include a clue about PG, but thought I had given too many already.

As usual your choice of photo made this a real tough one!

I'm feeling annoyed at myself now, your clue was very good and I am a huge fan of the show. I too grew up watching it religiously although I was watching the repeats 25 years later...  :D

I implore you guys do not, under any circumstances, look for photos of the three lovely ladies as they are today, unless you want your dreams crushed!

there is a memorable scene when Tara follows Diana on the stairs –way out since thats where Diana leaves the series altogether. ms Peel checks whether Tara ('raboumdiee' is Steeds reaction when she introduces herself) still knows the art of the trade -as using a teaspoon in Steeds cup 'anti clockwise'...

There are many reasons why the Brits are soooo nice.
