The Triumph Renown was launched in 1949 with coachwork design clearly influenced by the Bentley MKV1. It was the first car from Standard to use the Triumph name and was quickly christened “Razor Edge” because of its angular styling. Just 15,000 were produced including a long wheel-base “limousine” version. Today they are quite rare.
This car is almost certainly the only Renown Hot rod in the world. It was put together in 2008 by Power and Performance in Norwich with mechanical spec almost as impressive as the standard of the finish - 3.0 V6 Ford engine with Weber carb, stainless custom exhaust, Ford C3 auto box with 3 litre Capri rear axle, brakes and springs, Vitesse front suspension, steering and brakes, Mondeo wheels and tyres with Studebaker hubcaps (Triumph centre caps) and new wiring loom. The body is also modified with many custom built and shaped panels and a very high quality paint finish. The interior is newly trimmed and has Volvo 850 front seats and specially narrowed matching rear seat. The rest of the spec is far too detailed to list here but just about everything is upgraded or modified with many new and bespoke parts and some fittingly quirky touches like the matching green phone and bus bell horn!
On the road, this Renown is a well sorted, go anywhere road car – tight and easy to drive with plenty of torque and tall gearing.
When we saw this car we had to have it and not surprisingly it has won various shows and has been featured in many magazines. The history file is substantial with many pictures of the restoration and copies of magazine articles covering the whole process. The original registration number is valuable and transferable.
