Crosley Hot Shot based?

It's most likely based on a Crosley. That's all I know.

There's a Mk2 Consul or Zephyr in the background.  As these were introduced in 1956 tht is the earliest date for the picture.

An apparently American special in probably London.  Was it built on an air base?

Some of you may have seen that we're not the only people trying to unravel this mystery. Somebody acquired a colour polaroid of the car and some styling sketches that were drawn up at Lucas in Birmingham (the automotive electrical company) that apparently relate to this car. the date is 1957 and as you can see the car was definitely photographed in London.

Maybe the Lucas connection might jog somebody's memory as to the identity of the three gentlemen in the b/w picture? Perhaps Allemano you can PM me the source of this image?

This is all very odd, and quite frankly I don't believe much of it. Why would Donald Healey be interested in a new small car for the American market when he introduced the Sprite in 1958? Why would he prejudice sales of his own design by assisting with another? It looks ungainly and more like a home-built special - the Sprite at least looked cute gawky. Having said that, the seats look like Sprite items, and the headlight arrangement is similar although the lenses are very close together - would they have met legal requirements?

And why call the company Westland? Is that the name of the American backer? It's all a bit too much like a previous Healey model which was twice the size. I'm starting to think the whole photo/promotion business was some sort of April Fools' joke. Hence the stetson. That body could have been any one of the numerous "specials" available in the UK at the time.

Having said all that, it appears to have finished up in the States. Maybe the joke went too far.

Westland Motors Ltd. of Hereford were coachbuilders from 1946 to the 1950s and were responsible for other Healeys as well as bodying Bristol and Lea-Francis chassis in the early post-war years.

The American who found the car reports a fibreglass body. I really can't believe that a coachbuilder was involved.

(PS Sorry to everyone if my post appeared to be a little bit negative - IMO the whole thing dosn't make sense, but my opinion is usually pretty worthless !)

Westland were reported still in business in the very early 1950s and this may have been an attempt by them to keep the business going to break into the fibreglass body market. Just my own thoughts/opinion - I have no proof of that fact...... ;)

Is it possible to make out the registration number on the original?  If so it would be possible to identify the owner of the trade plates.  As that would be the dealer selling the car it might offer a clue.

To earn a point, please tell me the full make, model name and year for this odd sports car, which I'm surprised has not appeared in Auto Puzzles before.
