A65 #11--Engines!--SOLVED by Tom_I, Vincent Vell Vet, and Hugo90

OK...1 point for each complete answer (that includes all three things I'm looking for), points to be given out at the end of the puzzle.  These are all late 1950s-1970 American engines.  Tell me what brand of engine each picture belongs to, an example of cubic inch displacement from that engine family, and an example of a car that engine came in.

Is #9 a small-block Ford V8 engine, as per the 289 cu in engine featured in Ford Mustangs and other Fords of the mid 60s?

I think #2 is the Mercury Super Marauder V8, introduced in 1958. I also think the cast aluminium air cleaner cover means it is the 400 hp version. Displacement is 430 cubic inches, or 7046 cc for those of a metric disposition. When introduced, this engine could be ordered with the Mercury Medalist, Monterey, Montclair or Park Lane.

That's correct!  That one's a very rare engine option, with triple 2 barrel carburetors...The basic engine family was called the MEL (for Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) family, and was produced from 1958-1968, when the 462 was replaced by the 460 in Lincolns sometime during the model year.  A cool thing about this engine is that the combustion chambers are in the block, not the heads, kind of like a Chevy 348/409.

From the ribs on the top of the air cleaner, and the lack of a breather hose from the filler on the valve cover, I don't think it's the later 351 cu in engine, so (as Carnut said) I think it could be the 289 cu in (4.7 litre) version introduced in 1963. It was used in the Ford Galaxie, Falcon, Fairlane and Mustang, and probably others as well.

Also right...this one is a 260 CI engine from the 1st production Mustang at the Henry Ford Museum...the engine was introduced in 1962 as a 221 in the Fairlane, and was used continuously up through the 1990s.

All right except #9...#3 is indeed from a Turbine car...nine of which still exist.  This could be a pic from any of them in Michigan (I believe there are four here).  #4 is a Buick 425 "Nailhead" from a '65 Riviera.  Dual Quads were an option on these...#6 is a Chrysler 440...#8 is a Pontiac OHC Six from a '67 LeMans convertible...

From the fixing bolt going through the valve cover, and the shape of the manifold, I think #7 could be a Studebaker V8. You could have had a 232 cu in version in a 1951 Commander when the engine was first offered. There were other sizes up to 304 cu in, including 259 and 289.

#7 is right...This one's from the "Plain Brown Wrapper" Studebaker stock drag car...It's a 304.5 R3 engine...
