A#439 - a four-pointer SOLVED
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:24:43 AM »
I've decided to post this picture as a puzzle, even if I don't know much about these cars myself.

The main puzzle is the car in the foreground. If you have any good ideas about the other two cars (that micro thing is not included ;D), I'll award you a point for each of them.

Points:

#1 - 2 points for the name of the builder [******] (the only thing I know).
#2 and #3 - are worth a point each if you can defend your idea (I don't know the answers myself - just have some ideas).

Happy puzzling!  :)

P.S. I hope some of our members know they're not supposed to reply for this puzzle ;)

---

EDIT:

the car in foreground has been identified by Oguerrerob. It is V.I. Babkin's racing car. The car in the far background supposedly is Trud, as correctly identified by Allemano.

Just as an addition...
Have to notice that 'Babkin V.I.' is the second name and the initials of the car's builder (and driver), while it could have had no name, which is not a rare thing when you speak about Soviet DIYs. The car used ZMZ 21 4-cylinder engine from GAZ 21 Volga. Judging by the other similar cars from its years, guess it could have been built around a tube frame with a major use of GAZ 21 parts, such as front and rear axes and transmission - those vehicles were often built at taxi stations using old (not always old, though) Volga taxis by taxi drivers and mechanics and raced by them as well - that was a truly enthusiasts' sport. Babkin has won a couple of minor races (probably with this car) in 1963 and is also listed with one 3rd place finish in 1962.

Unfortunately not! All I have is (translated) "Selfbuilt car, photo taken on the party rally grounds in Moscow. Participant of the rallye Moscow Kiev which was organized by the magazine Technics & Youth (?) in 1969. Probably ZAZ Zaporozhets based".

I have several more pics of this event. All cars without names, though..
I'll post them if you like!

Sure!

P.S. it's Техника молодежи (tehnika molodiozhi) / "Youth(s) technics"
P.P.S. According to my info, it's not ZAZ-engined. I don't know anything about the other parts.

These cars are so fascinating... there really needs to be a book written about the Soviet self built cars!
I may be wrong, but I believe that the first car Allemano posted is already on Arunas' site?

There is a book actually, but it is more about how to build a car, although it also describes some of the DIYs. Called "Я строю автомобиль" ('I build a car') and is in Russian only...

Actually there's a small chapter on Russian self built cars in this book: (available in German and French)

AFAIK Soviet racing and sports cars are also mentioned there? Don't have this book, but seen a couple fo shots from there. Is it worthy?

I checked the German volume a couple of months ago. As far as I can tell it's worthy, but not comprehensive (from the autopuzzler's point of view).
I can't remember if there's a chapter about racing, but believe, if so, not very detailed.

Allemano, I have added a point to your account for the correct identification of the car in the far background, which, supposedly, is the Trud.
