The lines reminds me of a Hunt...or better, the duralumin-covered steam-powered 'House Car' built by J. Roy Hunt, an Hoolywood motion-picture cameramen. 4-cylinder, 90 HP rear mounted engine. I have a modern pic of it, and it seems much longer than that...
EDIT - my picture shows the 1940 model, this one is from 37, called House Car #1 and also 'the Star' because of its hood ornament. There is also an identical sister vehicle, called 'the Turtle' which differs only in its hood emblem.

Being the Hunt specialist that I guessed you are, it's no wonder that you eventually found this one.
I noted it as the 1938 "Turtle", from a totally reliable source, but I can't remember in which issue of the magazine so I can't double-check.
