No, though Gizi Bajor was a legend, she was never reknown for her driving skills

pnegyesi

try to think of a Hungarian county....

guido66

Still part of present day Hungary?

pnegyesi

Yes, very much so

pnegyesi

Should this be opened to the wider public?

ImpishGrin

Maria Simonyi maybe?
It's not denial, I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

pnegyesi

Do you know a Hungarian county, named Simony or Simonyi :)? No, it's not her

ImpishGrin

No, but I also don't know any Hungarian actress named liked one of the counties :P

guido66

Let's start with the one most difficult to search for: Pest?

pnegyesi

No, to the south-west

ImpishGrin

After further research I've found quite a few hungarioan actresses that share their name with a county, but unfortunately none of them was born in the XIX century :(

pnegyesi

Now, we're getting somewhere :) This is almost her last name

guido66

Somogyi Nusi, Anna  ;) Now for the car...

guido66

She raced a Alfa Romeo at Svábhegy/Schwabenberg in 1924

pnegyesi

Yes, that's her! So far two points for you and you also got a lock on this for 24 hours to find two other brands.

Anna (nicknamed Nusi) Somogyi was quite a daredevil driver as you can see on this picture at the 1924 Schwabenberg race. Her car did not have a proper body, but she managed to score a class victory...

guido66

In 1925 she drove a Citroën and in 1927 a Rover

It seems that Guido left the rest of us no chance.
But I found a nice picture of the lady with a funny hat.

Unfortunately the winner takes it all :)

Anna (Nusi) Somogyi (1884-1963) was one of the few Hungarian actresses who had a succesful career before and after the 2nd World War. She played in operettas and in many movies. She had a versatile talent. And she was a keen motoring driver. When Ernő Steinitz obtained the rights to distribute Alfa Romeo in Hungary, she became a brand ambassador in 1924. Later she did the same for Citroen.
But she also drove Rover and other cars as well.

Guido66 - you just earned yourself four points!

Thanks for taking us out of Hollywood for once, pnegyesi.

My search was quit complicated by the fact (which I discovered) then in Hungarian it seems to be like in Japanese: you never know what comes first, name or surname!

pnegyesi

Yes, that's true. Both Hungarian and Japanese names are in reverse order, compared to British naming standards.
Négyesi Pál - that is how my name is written in Hungarian. Pal Negyesi is the form I use in non-Hungarian environment.

Glad you liked this puzzle.

guido66

;D I found a really informative site on pre WW2 Hungarian racing  ;)

Belgian people also tend to place the surname before the first name.
