Car #10 is a 1950 offset HWM which would make it the car driven by Kirk Douglas in sports car trim in the Racers (aka Such men are dangerous) but I don't recognise him among the drivers - I'll guess at no 8.

:) Right and right, a young Issur Danielovitch (Douglas' real name). The car is an HWM and a rather famous one, so I'd like you to be more precise. I am posting a picture of the car in the film (my first picture was another HWM). Locked for you until your next  reply.

Technically, yes. Since geology made a wrong pairing, and you corrected it, you have the point even if he recognized Gable. But he gets the second point for the movie connection.

The HWM in the film was later purchased from the film company and fitted with a Chevrolet V8 engine and named the "Stovebolt Special" .  The car still exists and resides in England in the care of Simon Taylor.

Yes. It proves that you know the car. But what was its engine and full name at the time of the film, before the Chevrolet engine?

Like all HWMs it originally had an Alta engine.  Hence some people now call these cars HWM-Altas but in period they were simply HWMs.

(The HWM-Jaguar sports car came later)

That's fine with me. I found  it as a HWM Alta F2.

racer #10 James Caan, 1965  Galaxie #5, movie Red Line 7000

I just watched this one on Youtube, they used a couple of different years of Fred Lorenzen's cars for this movie, but it starts out with the '65...

I find it very funny that the only one that was both an actor and a pilot should be the last one identified! Newman's name in this movie was "Frank Capua". I masked it on the picture.
You're right for those last two, of course.

I find it somehow very long to type again all the detailed anwers here. Please look them up in the above posts. So, to make it simple:

Racer #5 and Car #3 (metalshapes) in To Please a Lady (geology)
Racer #4 and Car #2 in On the Beach (geology, twice)
Racer #6 and Car #6 in Fast and Furious (geology, twice)
Racer #2 and Car #8 in The Killers (metalshapes, twice)
Racer #3 and Car #7 in The Big Wheel (metalshapes, twice)
Racer #9 and Car #1 in The Last American Hero (metalshapes, twice)
Racer #1 and Car #4 in The Young Racers (metalshapes, twice)
Racer #8 and Car #10 in The Racers (D-type, twice)
Racer #10 and Car #5 in Red Line 7000 (metalshapes, twice)
Racer #7 and Car #9 in Winning (metalshapes, twice)

I was hoping it would have lasted a little longer. :taz:

The count goes like this:
metalshapes: 13 pts
geology: 5 pts
D-type: 2 pts

A very nice idea for a puzzle (again!), but once you're on the right trace and one's already solved the other pairings are not so tough anymore. :-\
Just a similar case as it was in the 'art' group puzzle.  ;)

Sure. For a while I considered not answering at all to partially wrong replies (wrong man, wrong car or wrong event), and make it a little tougher, but my heart must be too soft.
I usually like to lead puzzlers away from the beaten tracks, towards films or anything. But here I think those three knew cinema well enough and needn't make too long researches.
I also took a chance by choosing some well-known actors, because I am often amazed how people won't recognize a face that's seems easy. Yet they recognized little known actors such as William Campbell almost as fast as Fred Astaire.

Yeah, there is some irony to that... ;D

He got into racing because of a role he played as an actor ( and I believe it was this movie...)

I think car #9 was driven by Jeff Bridges #9 in The Last American Hero.

Jeff Bridges Racer #9  :)
The Last American Hero :)

But no connection with car #9.

Then its the Monte Carlo. ( #1)

Ahhhh,....see ... I hadn't seen the movie, since I don't watch movies much.  Oh, well....

*sighs*

And knightfan was right, this is Bobby Allison's car,

I knew that, because of this:

Kevin, founder of the FGMCC, created a "Coke Machine" replica, that Bobby Allison signed:
