It looks like a Mercury GT in those times when it had a hard top.

Yes - that was the car as it was originally built.

Lotus Twin Cam, I believe.
Also, according to the story I've found, the car was built with an open bodywork in 1963 and equipped with a hard top by 1968.

Lotus Twin-cam is correct.
I thought it was the other way round - first with the hard-top then converted to open format.
Will investigate further as I may be wrong.
Most Mercurys were open sports racers but it is one of the makes I'm researching at the moment
