This IS a Plymouth - my apologies.  (That's why it said PLYMOUTH on the front of the hood...)
I had misread the caption to the picture.
But I still need its full name and date for that point!

I'd say a 1948 or 1949 Plymouth interceptor project. I have a picture of a full scale mockup, dated 1944, of its forerunner. Exactly the same car, but in 1944 the front was more like the Chrysler Thunderbolt of 1941.

And you'd be right, except my source called it '1944'..
Before I award you the point can you post the picture of the car with the 1944 front and some proof that this is in fact a later version, from 1948/9?  I'm a bit surprised if my source is wrong!

Here is the picture (from the very reliable Crestline book). As a matter of fact, I will date your picture from 1947, because I found in the same book, the same grille on a 1947 styling mockup for an another project, the Plymouth Cadet. With much more conventional flanks and rear fenders.

According to my source book (in which I have found no mistakes as yet!) the pictures in the puzzle were taken in 1946, but as you say it was the 2nd version of the 1944 proposal (I wonder why they thought the Cadet front would look better than that original front?)

The detachable hardtop was made of "that new wartime wonder material, fiberglass".

So you have the point for correctly identifying this as the 2nd version of the 1944 original and this puzzle is solved.
