Film adaptations of his work came some time after his static works became well-known.

Maybe he first created comic characters which were animated as cartoons later? Perhaps Chuck Jones the creator of the Roadrunner?

You're on the right track, but this artist's creations didn't inspire any specific automobile - at least, not as far as I can determine.

Also, FWIW, I think Jones' first paid work was in animation. That is not the case with the subject of this puzzle.

The Peanuts appeared on several Ford Falcon ads between ~ 1960 - 1964

Right you are. They were also featured on ads for the complete (2 cars lines at the time) Ford lineup.
