Can't find a pic of the thing anywhere, but Mickey Thompson built a twin Porsche engined roadster for Indy. This is not it, by any chance?

Indy 1967: Front wheel drive four wheel steering Wynn's Spit Fire Special, built by Thompson, driven by Sammy Sessions
As far as I can make out, he did not qualify. As far as I can remember, the car was said to be 'undrivable'.

Correct!
Mickey designed the 3 valve per cylinder Chevy small block used in this car and the more conventional rear-drive car he entered the same year (like this one, built by Joe Huffaker).
Neither of Thompson's cars qualified at Indy in 1967.

More images: (The engine image was probably taken when the car showed up at the Bonneville Salt Flats, after failing to qualify at Indy.)
