During the history of the car, there were a lot of companies which built both two- and four-wheelers. A visit to the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in Germany got me thinking about this puzzle.

There are twelve cars and twelve motorcycles. Two points are being offered for the correct pairing. In case of motorcycles, I am happy with just the brand name, but you have to identify at least the model of the cars too. Beware, identifying either the car or the motorcycle is not worth a point. Only the correct pairing and identifying both results in points. I think some of the cars are ridiculously easy, that's why I set the rules so, but I am happy to listen to other opinions.

I hope you will enjoy this group puzzle :)!

First the cars

I am truly hopeless when it comes to identifying motorcycles, but there's one here that even I can recognise. That's motorcycle #12, the Honda 50, or C100, or Super Cub, or whatever you like to call it. With over 60 million produced, it's reputedly the world's best-selling powered vehicle.

This pairs with car #11, the Honda Quintet (1980-85).

And maybe I'll try another one. Car #1 is a BSA 10hp Special Saloon (1933-36).

Although I've never owned a motorcycle, as a teenager I did once think about buying a BSA Bantam, and that's motorcycle #4. I'm pretty sure the one shown is a D3 Bantam Major from about 1953.

Ah, but car #8 is not an Isetta - it's got a door on the right-hand side!

It's a Hoffmann Auto-Kabine 250, produced in Ratingen, Germany, between September 1954 and February 1955. Hoffmann sought a licence from Iso in Italy to produce the car, but were successfully sued by BMW, who were already licensed to make the Isetta in Germany.

This pairs with motorcycle #2, which I think is a Hoffmann Gouverneur 250-cc flat twin.

Very good Tom_I
I find it difficult to identify motorcycles and pre-1930 cars but I should have looked more closely at the Auto-Kabine.
It's all good for the brain cells though!

However, I'm going to have another go -

Car no. 12 - Dufaux 40hp Tourer 1906
                   twins with
Motorcycle no. 9 - Dufaux Motosacoche single cylinder (early 1900s)

Tom_I: you are right with the pairing of the Hoffmann Autokabine and the motorcycle.

woodinsight: yes, the motorcycle is a Motosacoche, but we don't have a Dufaux in this puzzle

Well done, Pal. I was completely misled by car #4, which I was convinced was a Phänomobil. I spent ages trying to work out what model it was, until a comment in an article made me realise that it's not one of those at all. :-\

It's a Cyklonette 6hp of 1912, made by the Cyklon Maschinenfabrik of Berlin.

The Cyklon motorcycle is #8, from about 1900, also with the engine mounted above the front wheel.

I have a pairing for the Motosacoche (motorcycle No 9). Apologies to Woodinsight for stealing it, but I can add that it's a 1.25 hp model from 1909.

As well as motorcycles, Motosacoche of Geneva also made M.A.G. engines, and in the 1920s produced a range of small cars under the name Maximag. Though it sounds a bit unlikely, car No 5 is a Maximag 10hp "Grand Sport" from 1924.

And here's the evidence to support it. :)
