Solved: NTM #47 - Something Doesn't Fit
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:22:39 PM »
Below are pictures of 5 makes, most of them well-known. There are 2 different connections between them. But one of the cars doesn't fit into the first connection, and a another one doesn't fit into the second connection.

For one point each, what are the 5 makes?
For another point, what is the first connection & which make doesn't fit it?
For another point, what is the second connection & which make doesn't fit it?

Should be pretty easy, actually. The idea definitely owes something to this puzzle: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=9617 ...but the connections here are pretty superficial & obvious.

OK, have at it, Experts. This one shouldn't make it to Pros, or I will be disappointed in you!

Hmmm, maybe I should have explained this with a Venn diagram (http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=12660.0). I could say that one of the cars is in A, one is in B, and three are in both A and B. Does that help?  ;)

Anyway, note that at least 3 of these makes are very well-known (although I've tried to select un-obvious examples of them). One of them you've probably seen a real-life example of today if you've been out at all.

OK, like I said, I really didn't think this one would make it to the Pros, but here it is. Eat it up, guys!

Boy, you go away from the computer for one night and you miss everything. OK, let me sort thru all this...

Not every guess is exactly on target, but most are close enough to count, so here's what we have:

1 - 1914 Arbenz Model G - Joćo
2 - c.1921 Benz 10-30 PS - pnegyesi
3 - 1923 Mercedes 6/24/40 PS - Paul Jaray (it's a Mercedes from pre-Mercedes-Benz days, so that's all I needed)
4 - 1924 Benz Söhne 8-25 - Paul Jaray
5

1 - all but one (#1) connected with Mercedes-Benz - guido66
3 - all but one (#3) have Benz in the make name - Joćo

That should make it really obvious what make #5 is, so I'll need make and model for that one.

And we are done!

5 - 1928 Mercedes-Benz 8/38 PS  - pnegyesi

1 - all but one (#1) connected with Mercedes-Benz - guido66
3 - all but one (#3) have Benz in the make name - Joćo

pnegyesi - 2 points
Paul Jaray - 2 points
Joćo - 2 points
guido66 - 1 point

Now, come on, Rookies & Experts... see how easy this was?  ;)
