Ray B's What-Where-When # 497 - A 1907 Cadillac, Hollywood 1958
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:37:50 PM »

Is the title of this puzzle obvious enough?
The What is about the oldtimer.
I'll spare you the Who this time (but feel free to tell us if you know).

This one has been languishing for a while, so let's try to get started on it.

Is this a particular event that we need to identify? I don't know what it is, but to get things rolling:

What? - I'm not very good on American cars, old or new, but the oldtimer is a Cadillac (and I'm sure there are no prizes for guessing that!). I think it's a Model K, and if that's right, then I also think it's a 1907 model, and not a 1906, by the shape of the front wings.

Where? - My guess is Hollywood, California, where Clarence Dixon was a well-known Cadillac dealership on North Vine Street. But this is not the front of the dealership, which would have been glass-fronted showrooms. This is obviously the servicing department, so round the back of the building, or the side? Or maybe somewhere else completely?

When? - I'd guess 1958, solely on the basis that Hollywood residents probably wouldn't want to be seen in last year's model of car, and (again unless I'm mistaken), that's a '58 Lincoln Continental behind the Cadillac.

That's as far as I've got, and having tackled a few of Monsieur Ray's puzzles before, I'm fairly sure that the answer to this is more than just the sum of its parts.

So is that any kind of a start?

Tom, this perfectly right as to the 3 questions asked. I have no info about what exact model is the Cadillac, but it's a 1907 indeed.
One point for you, and another is to be won if you give us a more precise date. You may find it if you retrace that same picture, and I guess then you'll have the Who also.

Thanks, Ray, but I'll have to pass on this. I'm going to be away for a few days, and probably won't be able to get online - which is another way of saying that I'm too mean to pay what hotels charge for WiFi access!

So please open it up for everyone else, and I'll chip in if I can.  :)

It's noted, Tom.
So first point, for the question asked, definitely goes to Tom_I.
The bonus point will be avalaible for anyone in about 50 hours, unless he seizes it before.
And this one moves one story up.

Most probably IŽll be hammering down the Autobahn heading Bavaria on Saturday, so chances are very good for anybody else.

Well, I've managed to get online at this hotel, and I think it's free (though I might get a nasty shock at the end of the stay). ;D

It's probably way off the mark, but I did wonder that if it's Hollywood in 1958, whether it had anything to do with the temporary laying of the first eight stars in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

If that's wrong, I'm probably not going to have any time to research things for the next three days, as I have a fairly tight schedule, so I'll be quite happy if you open the puzzle up to everyone else, Ray.

Interesting. I could see the name Carolyn King scratched across the top of the negative, but didn't manage to work out who she was. :-[

Nobody I know, that's for sure. I guess that Grob found my source, that's how he found those precisions.

Well done, the both of you.
