This is Ransom E. Olds and his steam car in about 1890.  This may have been the one that was headed to a buyer in India when the ship it was on sank...

You're correct - it's a photograph of first steam car built by R. E. Olds, Lansing, 1886. In 1893, it was sold to an English firm and shipped to their branch house in Bombay, India. It was the first sale of a self-propelled road vehicle ever made in Michigan.

I have no information on the ship sinking.
