Just to enlarge a little: the Rover P8 was developed in the late 1960's as Rover's new 'large' car to replace the 3.5 litre V8. It was to have had a V8 or even a V12 engine, but like the mid-engined Rover BS from around the same time became a victim of the merger with Jaguar and the clash that it would have had with the forthcoming new XJ6. The plug was therefore pulled, but the V8 engine they were developing was not completely wasted as it went on to power the Australian-built Leyland P76, a car which never quite fulfilled its potential, to put it kindly!
