Built by Ghia, it was a proposal to replace the Beetle. I have it as Volkswagen EA53.

As far as I understand, Ghia developed not the single example of EA 53, right?

As far as I can glean from the very few sites that carry a picture of this car Ghia actually designed 2 versions, one in 1960 and the other (the puzzle picture) in 1961.  The whole idea was canned in 1962 in favour of a much larger car, which went on to reach production as the VW 411.
