Its one of the Firebird experimental concept cars.

( not sure if it was ever called a Firebird, but it does seem to have the logo in the stitching under the hood.)


The General Motors XP-500 was the world's first free piston automobile. It was an experimental vehicle built by the General Motors Research Laboratories that was completed and announced to the public in 1956 after 14 months of development.

That's the car! Quite similar in appearance to the Firebird, but as you've related, a much different form of motive power.
