OP's Art & Cars #13 - Dennis Wilson and a '55 Chevy 150
« on: February 14, 2010, 08:41:37 AM »
A well known mug, but be careful - perhaps not as easy as it seems.

Need the artist and the car to win the point. ID the person, and you'll get 24 hours to ID the car. After that, it opens again to all.

Right profession.

His career and his life ended in the 1980's.

Died in an accident or did he commit suicide?

It was an accident, but it was exacerbated by  his reckless behavior.

Dennis Wilson...1955 Chevy 150 from "Two Lane Blacktop"?

That's the guy, and the car.

Dennis Wilson starred alongside James Taylor and Warren Oates in the critically acclaimed film Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) as "The Mechanic". It depicts "The Driver" (Taylor) and "The Mechanic" driving aimlessly across the United States in their '55 Chevy surviving on money made by street drag-racing.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/JKcIGPQST9s&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/JKcIGPQST9s&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;&quot;</a>

On December 28, 1983, shortly after his 39th birthday, Wilson drowned at Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles after drinking all day and diving in the afternoon to recover items he had thrown overboard at the marina from his yacht back in 1980. On January 4, 1984 he was buried at sea off the California coast by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two points for you.

That puzzle one was the well-known car; this one, the lesser-known co-pilot/mechanic and sometimes driver, but yes.

I saw this movie ages ago on late-night TV, and really liked it. I wonder if I'd still like it now, with 30+ more years of 'wisdom'?

Well, I had seen it on the big screen at the time, as I had seen the two westerns by the same director, and loved them all.
Threee years ago I took my girl-friend to a movie theater where they played the same three films. She yawned at the westerns (amd I too, a little), less at Two Lane Blacktop.
It's still a fascinating film.
