Looks like an early 70s Datsun concept car of some sort.

Everyone is assuming it's Japanese.
Is that correct?

This was a tricky one. I had to resort to Google translating all my search terms into Japanese.

I also made the assumption that it was electric, as there's no air intake on the front, and eventually, several pages into an image search for "ダイハツ電気自動車", I found the brochure below. The frontal treatment is slightly different, but it looks to be basically the same car. Unfortunately the brochure is only posted as images, so you can't use a translator on it, and while it gives technical specs for a number of Daihatsu electric vehicles, it doesn't seem to mention the car on the front cover. So I couldn't get a model name or year. The number plate just reads "Daihatsu EV" (I think).

But plodding on, I found a few words about it on another Japanese site, which gives it as the Daihatsu EV1 prototype electric car, which was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1973. It has two 5.6 kW electric motors, one driving each rear wheel, but that's all I could glean. I still haven't found anything about it in English.

The design somehow looks very Italian (maybe it is Sessano related?)

Agreed, this is a very clean and edgy design - would be interesting who was responsible for it.

Daihatsu, who had a good experience in electric car research and development, was commissioned a light weight passenger car. The monocoque body accomodated 4 passengers. Each rear wheel had its own motor (45V, 5.6kW) powered by 4 pieces of battery (96V, 220Ah/5h)

This car has been commissioned by A.I.S.T. (www.aist.go.jp) as a demonstrational vehicle, AFAIU. The other cars were Toyota EV2, Mazda EV3, Nissan EV4 and Mitsubishi EV5 (electric bus).

However, no information about the bodywork itself. Couldn't this be Daihatsu's own effort?
