Many inventions have been invented for a purpose to end up in a different way as intended.

Nobel's Dynamite, for example...

But in the Gatsometer's case, I'm not buying that.

I read a interview in which Maus stated that he got the idea when he drove into a speedtrap (which were held with two Police officers at the time, and they measured the speed between them ), with Jan Apetz as his passenger, I believe.

The Officers had to be a certain distance apart which gave you time to react, if you happened to spot the first one.

Maus did, and pulled over to ask him for directions.

So no ticket...

Appearently, this was the moment the Gatsometer was born.
Or at least, the idea of it.

I think it was invented for the exact purpose its being used.

To enforce Velocity Tax...

Velocity tax :D.
Interesting. As far as my source goes it was to do with better cornering techniques, but I think we cannot ask the man himself anymore?

I do think that speed limits have a purpose. like traffic lights. I mean there is a speed limit on a circuit as well.
